For the general public, musical film went stale years ago when it sold out to Hollywood. Yet "art-house musicals" have become a hot new trend on the international festival circuit. A growing number of directors are harnessing the power of lyrics and the magic of choreography to prove that music can accompany any movie, just as it accompanies us every day of our lives. An erotic film starring cannibalistic sopranos, the deconstruction of Béla Bartók's opera Bluebeard's Castle, and Paul Thomas Anderson's first documentary with Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood make up this new contemporary film cycle.
