Drowning in a Sea of Data, curated by João Laia, develops in three interconnected manners: as an exhibition, a performance programme and a reader. The live artworks stage experiences that further intensify a number of questions explored in the project and brings together pieces by Pedro Barateiro, Rabih Mroué, Evan Ifekoya, Teatro Praga, Alex Baczynski-Jenkins and Pakui Hardware.
The live artworks stage experiences that further intensify a number of questions explored in the project. M Reme Silvestre proposes an augmentation of cardiac rhythms and muscular resistance aiming at a different mode of occupying the exhibition and performative spaces, in a gesture that is activated during the whole duration of the live programme. GIRLISONFIRE inquire into states of exhaustion and endurance, constant stimulation and the overlapping of realities or timelines. Rabih Mroué analyses the politics inherent in dealing with online sourced moving images from the point of view of the state and society. Pedro Barateiro projects a state between human and machine, layered by a variety of sounds reminiscing of ambient tracks, political demonstrations and red carpet events. Evan Ifekoya explores the ocean as archive, meditation and echo as an affective encounter in the context of blackness, sociality and inheritance as they diffract through queer nightlife and trauma. Teatro Praga proposes subjectivity, community, politics and struggles as open-source structures involving ecological and queer agendas. Alex Baczynski-Jenkins examines queer politics through desire, intimacy and love, materialising a choreographic mediation between affection, desire, distraction and loss. And lastly, Pakui Hardware guides the audience through pathways of regenerative medicine, bio-capitalism, shamanism and immortal sea creatures. This last performance will take place on May 18 and will also be part of Gelatina festival´s programme.
Alongside the performance programme, Drowning in a Sea of Data includes an exhibition and a reader.
