A journey that begins with the sound of traditional Indian instruments electronically manipulated by HVAD, continues with the spiritual, cosmic techno of Nkisi and ends with the futuristic IDM of Wanton Witch.
HVAD
HVAD plays ancient Indian instruments like the esraj and tanpura which he manipulates with contact microphones to produce a totally different sound from the traditional one. Original recordings cut on dubplates are another key instrument that he uses both in the studio and on stage.
In the last 15 years, Hari Shankar Kishore aka HVAD has been active on the music scene with numerous projects and aliases (Albertslund Terror Korps, Kid Kishore, Syg Nok, Kommunal Dubplate Service). In 2022 he started the record label ULLLU and released the album Notice a Tiny Scratch for the Blue Behind, a collaboration with singer Abdullah Miniawy. His second release was the solo HVAD 2xLP entitled YUG, which reflects the continuity in the creation of a personal musical language that uses classical Indian instrumentation and electro and has been the base of HVAD's practice for more than a decade.
Nkisi
Nkisi produces intense, powerful club tracks influenced in equal measure by African polyrhythms, techno hardcore and 1970s Italian horror films. Her work gravitates towards the more aggressive side of dance music yet maintains a heavy emotional factor as well as a sense of dreaminess.
Nkisi is a London-based producer and visual artist. She was one of the co-founders of NON Worldwide, a pioneering collective of experimental artists from across the African diaspora. In 2020 her new label INITIATION emerged with INT001, a three-track EP that melts rhythmic noise with ancient Kongo drum traditions. As a dj, Nkisi channels 160+ bpm kick drums and metallic hectic percussions, hypnotising the dance floor in a transcendental ritual.
Wanton Witch
Wanton has created an album that feels like a reflection of the “aggregation” that already exists in musical internet sub-cultures and communities. Featuring 11 tracks, these recordings are the first body of work from the Asian producer and include different snapshots of electronic music genres, from IDM and experimental to hardcore and rave, using caustic electronics to break moulds. The frantic jump from genre to genre and mixing of diverse sound textures and landscapes reflect Wanton Witch's mutable personality and own experience navigating a hostile world as a queer trans woman in Malaysia.
With an early taste for trap and hip hop, Wanton Witch (Borneo Island, 1993) began working in the club and techno scene where she found her musical voice and launched her dj career in 2018. Wanton is also the co-founder and original member of the queer underground collective Non Non Non that has become a staple of Bangkok nightlife.
