For Joseph Kamaru, aka KMRU, sound is a sensory medium for expressing social, material and conceptual interpretations. Born in Nairobi, KRMU carries with him a repository of field recordings from the Kenyan capital and beyond, capturing them in creative compositions, installations and performances. He has earned international acclaim for his ambient recordings, including the 2020 album Peel, released on Editions Mego, and he has presented his work at the Nyege Festival, Mutek Montreal, Unsound, GAMMA, CTM and other festivals.
Joseph Kamaru, also known as KMRU, is a sound artist and experimental ambient musician raised in Nairobi, Kenya and now resident in Berlin, where he obtained a master's degree in sound studies and sonic art at the Universität der Künste Berlin. He has earned praise for his performances and releases at the Barbican, Berlin Atonal, Présences électronique, and his releases on Editions Mego, Subtext and Seil Records. KMRU has carved out a definitive space on the list of essential authors of experimental ambient music.
