Hunter began her musical journey in the church where she played the drums and guitar and sang in the choir. It wasn't until she studied vocal performance at CalArts that she discovered the harp, an instrument she associated with fantasy, psychedelia and dream worlds, and became an immediate devotee. Her crystalline, celestial sound meanders subtly through her compositions, intertwining with electronic textures, strings, winds and evocative vocal harmonies.
To compose Lovegaze, Hunter moved to a small coastal town along the English Channel and started recording demos with a borrowed Celtic harp. After meeting the London-based producer Cicely Goulder, she returned to England a year later to continue working on her album. The result is a fascinating testimony to the resilience of the natural world.
Nailah Hunter is a multi-instrumentalist and composer, daughter of a Belizean pastor. She currently lives in Los Angeles and has been recording music inspired by mystical folk and ambient since 2019. To date she has released several singles and two EPs— Spells and Quietude—as well as her LP Lovegaze, which she will present in Madrid. With her bimonthly programme Astral Garden at NTS, she summons healing musical frequencies you can float off to.
