YOU GOT TO GET IN TO GET OUT: El continuo sonoro que nunca se acaba

The project was launched in late 2018, drawing on the curators’ extensive experience of techno music on countless dance floors. In their own words, they tapped “a wide variety of knowledge gleaned from continuous journeys and remixes along its elusive genealogies, its rhythms on the surfaces and its mythologies in the depths, its most visible histories and its blurriest intra-histories, its footnotes, its beats in perspiring bodies, its canonical and apocryphal texts, its needle skips, its cultural objects, its moments of celebration and its spaces of conflict”.

Accompanied by a monthly programme of podcasts and a publication that compiles theoretical reflections on techno, the exhibition YOU GOT TO GET IN TO GET OUT: El continuo sonoro que nunca se acaba delves into the dance floor experience and how it is related to artistic practices, “putting forms of knowledge that openly know and recognise a visceral and corporeal dimension at the centre of attention, listening and contact”.

The artists and works brought together in the show intersect with techno culture and the dance floor through synaesthesias, rhythms and elements that are shared, repeated, appropriated and reworked. The exhibition will feature the sensuality of surroundings and the constant interactions between elements that are seemingly chronologically and spatially distant; the cultural uses of light and darkness, club architecture beyond architecture; the black roots of techno and its inherent socio-political power relations; the ritual forms of a collective body with a reiterative yet intermittent beat; the material dimension of techno and the anatomy of the individual bodies that dance to it; and the disappearance of the bodily source of voices transformed into sound.

*The project’s title combines two phrases that the curators borrowed from the history of dance culture. You Got to Get In to Get Out revives the slogan printed on the banner of the Tresor club float at the 1991 Love Parade, a singular vehicle with a dance floor in the middle. El continuo sonoro que nunca se acaba [The Never-ending Sound Continuum] is a modified version of a phrase coined by Miguel Ángel del Ser, aka Psicolabio, during his monthly show on the Madrid radio station Svala Radio.

• Thursday 07 and Friday 08 - 19.00 h. 'HIGHER xtn.' by Michele Rizzo
  HIGHER xtn. is an adaptation of the piece HIGHER created by Michele Rizzo in 2015 for the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam that explores the club as a space for self-expression and to generate bonds.

• Friday 08 - 21:00 h. 'Deep Inside' by Ania Nowak
  In her new performance, the artist listens to the voices that drove the rhythms of house to summon many long-forgotten singers, often marginalized by their gender and race. Nowak speaks to the ghosts of those voices, honoring them as leaders and partners. For memory and ecstasy.

• Saturday 09 - 21:00 h. 'El tío Caramelo' by Yandira aka Sergi Botella
  A Valencian uncle named Carmelo, whose name Sergi Botella changed, gives the title to this musical, textual and performative project. The piece comes from the Valencian music scene in the late 80s, exactly at the same time the artist was drinking his first wines with Uncle Caramelo.

• Friday 15 - 19:00 h. 'Radical Sociability: Enacting Intersectional Affinity' by Lou Drago
  During the #metoo movement, the rise of the call-out culture was evident, a technique that is based on the use of social networks to amplify voices hitherto silenced. In this performance lecture in English, Lou Drago underscores the importance of preserving its potency and introduces a new term, which envisions an alternative future where polarized society can build resilient relationships and coalitions.

• Sunday 17 - 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 'Technosomatics', workshop with Frédéric Gies
  In this workshop taught in English, the dancer and choreographer Frédéric Gies shares, for the first time in Spain, a movement practice developed by himself that consists of a collective - and individual - exploration of the endocrine glands (the main chemical system of our body) and chakras (energy centers) through club dance to techno music.

• Sunday 17 - 19:00 h. 'Suspending Time' by Lou Drago
  Lou Drago's Suspending Time: Meditations for accessing alternate space / time in music listening session speculates on various types of music that enhance the experience of non-linear time. The public is invited to interact with the music with the aim of trying to experience a suspension of time.

YOU GOT TO GET IN TO GET OUT continuous sound live is a live music program that will take place during the course of the exhibition to put body to the listening from a collective and individual experience at the same time, beyond the situations, the temporality and the (rhythmic) structures of the club and the dance floor.
