Duration: | 1 hour 30 minutes |
In the manner of a film diary, and with a fresh, intimate style reminiscent of Agnès Varda, director Zoé Chantre reflects on her relationship with the world at a key moment in her life.
The Perpetual Leek (Le poireau perpétuel), directed by Zoé Chantre. France, 2021. 83’. Original soundtrack with Spanish subtitles
Like any good diary, this film begins with a date: 5 March. Every year, on that day, an ant comes through the director’s door, announcing that spring is just around the corner. That date also happens to be her mother’s birthday. But this year it is different; her mother has cancer, and faced with a life that threatens to unravel, Zoé begins to wonder if it is time for her to become a mother.
With a keen sense of humour, ingenious visual resources and painstaking observation of the smallest details in search of connections between art and society, the film shows the everyday reality of a director who, as if her life were not already complicated enough, must also live with an abnormal curvature of the spine and the consequences of a brain tumour she suffered as a child, including trips to India and Vietnam.
The film had its world premiere at FIDMarseille 2021, where it won three awards. This will be its first screening in Spain.
Zoé Chantre is a filmmaker, set designer and visual artist, born in France in 1981. She graduated from the Strasbourg École supérieure des arts décoratifs (E.S.A.D.) in 2007, and in 2012 the Berlinale premiered her first feature film, Tiens-moi droite, also based on her own personal experiences.
