An unsettling directorial debut where the real and the imaginary overlap as a young girl crosses the threshold of sanity to escape the outside world.
Celia, directed by Ann Turner. Australia, 1989. 102’
The emotional distress of growing up in an environment of political mistrust and misinformation, coupled with the trauma of being bullied, receiving punishment at home and school, mourning the death of her beloved rabbit and discovering her grandmother’s lifeless body, drives Celia to seek alternatives to her bleak surroundings in the supernatural and fantastical. The results are not always peaceful, and sometimes more destruction is needed to counteract the injustices she sees around her.
Ann Turner (Australia, 1960) is a film and television director and screenwriter. She is also known for the titles Hammers over the Anvil (1993), Dallas Doll (1994) and Irresistible (2006). As a filmmaker, she is particularly concerned with how things are depicted, and how that influences the way people view the world. Feminism is also very important to her, and she believes the best films hold a mirror to society that echoes through the decades.
