Considered one of the most imaginative and extraordinary releases of 2019, this satirical comedy exposes the false appearances of a perfect American middle-class residential neighbourhood through a sequence of bizarre events that recall elements of the cinema of David Lynch, Todd Solondz and Tim Burton.
Greener Grass, by Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe. United States, 2019. 96 min.
Jill and Lisa are intimate enemies, housewives and mothers in suburban America where people drive golf carts, wear dental braces—even if their teeth are perfect—and passive-aggressive rage has become a new form of courtesy. Jill has a compulsive need to please people. To the extent that when Lisa says her new baby is adorable, Jill offers it to her on impulse and Lisa accepts.
Premiered at Sundance in 2019, the film has left its mark everywhere it’s been screened. Much of this merit is owing to the bold approach adopted by Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe, directors, screenwriters and lead actors in the feature-length film. The success of the short film, with the same title as the long one, led them to produce what is considered to be one of the most imaginative and extraordinary releases of 2019.
