The winner of the Best International Documentary award at Dart 2020 explores a variety of issues concerning the possibilities and limits of the legacy of Pritzker Prize-winner Luis Barragán and asks two questions in particular: Why was the work of Mexico’s most famous architect hidden in Switzerland? What happens after the author’s death?
The Proposal, by Jill Magid Mexico, 2018. 83'
Known as “the artist among architects”, Mexican-born Luis Barragán is one of the most famous architects of the 20th century. After he passed away in 1988, much of his work was locked away in a Swiss bunker, hidden from the world's view. In an attempt to resurrect Barragán's life and art, artist Jill Magid creates a daring proposition that becomes an artwork in itself, an act of negotiation that explores how far an artist will go to democratise access to art.
American artist Jill Magid's work is deeply ingrained in her lived experience, exploring and blurring the boundaries between art and life. She explores the emotional, philosophical and legal tensions between the individual and “protective” institutions, such as intelligence agencies and the police. Magid makes use of institutional quirks, systemic loopholes that allow her to make contact with people “on the inside”. Her work tends to be characterised by the dynamics of seduction and the resulting narratives often take the form of a love story.
