This session dives into the family recollections of two film-makers, Norika Sefa and Julieta Seco, through the home videos they filmed with a VHS camera in the 1990s.

The invention of the VHS (Video Home System) introduced a video recording and playback system into thousands of homes around the globe. From that moment on, family archives took on a whole new dimension and collective memory changed for ever. Decades later, film-makers all over the world are rediscovering these home videos and rethinking recent history through the lens of first-hand experiences.

Programme

Like a Sick Yellow, by Norika Sefa. Kosovo. 2024. 23 minutes. OV with Spanish subtitles. Premiere in Spain

An immersion in the family memories of Norika Sefa. Through faded images shot with a VHS camera, we see the rituals of a family at prenuptial celebrations. The film-maker’s parents, aunts and uncles, cousins and friends gather at a house as we become more and more aware of a tragedy waiting to unfold in the background: the war is just beginning in Kosovo. Cinema preserves the faces of those who are no longer with us.

Norika Sefa is a Kosovan film-maker who writes, directs and edits her films. She trained at FAMU, the Film and TV Academy of the Performing Artes in Prague (Czech Republic). Looking for Venera, released in 2021, was her first film. It represented Kosovo at the Oscars and won numerous accolades, including the Special Jury Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, where her latest film Like a Sick Yellow received its first showing. She is a member of the European Film Academy.

Corazón embalsamado, by Julieta Seco. Argentina. 2024. 68 minutes. OV with English subtitles. Premiere in Madrid

Julieta Seco created this self-portrait as a series of chapters that follow the beads in a rosary, combining archival footage with images of the present. In the 1990s, a little girl becomes restless as she grows up in a town hemmed in by mountains and churches in the Catamarca region of northern Argentina. It hasn’t rained in a long time and the rivers are dry. On the verge of adolescence, the girl fantasises in her room about things that are still forbidden to her.  She confesses her wish to the Virgin Mary.

Julieta Seco, an Argentinian film-maker and editor, studied Film and TV at the National University of Córdoba. As a film editor, she worked on Esquirlas by Natalia Garayalde (2020), which won awards at Visions du Reel (Switzerland) and Jeonju (South Korea), and Solo la luna comprenderá, by Kim Torres (2023). She released her first film, Corazón embalsamado [Embalmed Heart], in 2024 at the Punto de Vista festival in Navarre, obtaining a special jury mention.
