Is everything made of light? If so, what is matter? Could elementary particles be swirls of light? Lux, a talk by the physicist Álvaro García, attempts to answer these questions by exploring the movement of light and its implications in the space-time relationship, while also explaining the origin of memory and history in electromagnetic phenomena.

Lux is a talk that revisits the idea of the “electromagnetic universe”. Is everything made of light? If so, what is matter? Could elementary particles be vortices of light?

In Lux, physicist Álvaro García shares his latest research into the interactions of bodies as a result of the affection of light on itself, which triggers internal oscillatory movements in particles. Everything shakes; nothing is still.

This explains the evolution of natural cycles through the concept of self-oscillation: we are complex, imbalanced engines that spin round and round like whirlwinds, devouring and dissipating radiation.

Lux concludes by trying to understand the implications of the concepts of space and time on the movement of light, exposing their abstract nature and tracing the origin of memory and history to electromagnetic phenomena.

Álvaro García teaches physics at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, where he obtained his science doctorate in 2016. His research focuses on non-linear physics and chaos theory, stochastic processes with applications for biology, classical electrodynamics and the basics of quantum mechanics. Specifically, in his latest work he has studied how extensive electrodynamic bodies generate electromagnetic waves through self-oscillation. He has published three major works in recent years: On an electrodynamic origin of quantum fluctuations (Nonlinear Dynamics, 2020), Stability analysis of the uniform motion of electrodynamic bodies (Physica Scripta, 2020) and Dynamics in fractal spaces (Fractals, 2021). The first two, together with works by other authors, were the source of inspiration for this talk.
