This artist captivates audiences everywhere they go with their music and stage presentation. Representing the butterfly of their first album, 'Chaos Butterfly', and its entire process of metamorphosis and rebirth, the staging manages to be both cathartic and ethereal. Debut in Spain.
For the opening night of the eighth edition of the She Makes Noise festival we have x/o, the pseudonym of Veron Xio, whose fluid identity is read as she/they/them. Their sound is permeated with a Noughties emo vibe, nu-metal, trip hop, Japanese anime and electronic experimentation.
The performance is split into two acts: a prologue and an epilogue, a caterpillar and its transformation into a butterfly on which the soundtrack marches. The artist plays with deep, eerie voices connected to jungle percussions, trip hop drums, broken, distorted rhythms and metal bands. The visuals draw on sci-fi references like 'Dune', anime and classic video games like 'Final Fantasy'. The dreamlike universe also recalls the light and colour effects of artists like Olafur Eliasson. All in all, a singular mix that fuses subversion and audiovisual experimentation with a DJ techno rave 'Chaos Butterfly' also incorporates the folklore and feminist revolutionary traditions of Vietnam, referencing the story of the Trung Sisters who in the first century CE led the first resistance movement against 247 years of Chinese occupation. Building something new occasionally involves an element of destruction. x/o identifies that journey with their own process of transition.
Veron Xio aka x/o is a Vietnamese-Canadian electronic music producer, film-maker, performer and visual artist. Their practice is based on disrupting gender binaries, using audiovisual storytelling to explore diversity beyond duality and emotions. They released their first long studio album on the palindrome date 22.02.2022 under the Berlin Precious Metal label. It followed a series of singles, remixes and collaborations with artists like Tiberius B, Rui Ho, Chino Amobi, Elysia Crampton, M.E.S.H. and Jlin. x/o is a founding member of s.M.i.L.e, an art collective in Vancouver (Canada), where they live for most of the year, which pushes the boundaries of club experimentation to take electronic music to another level. The collective's members include Actress, Hitmakerchinx, Mechatok, Nídia and Shygirl. In 2019 x/o was selected for the MUTEK Amplify and Somerset House Studios residency, and for the Red Bull Bass Camp Calgary. In recent years they have played at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Trauma und Kino in Berlin, the MUTEK festival and Creamcake’s 3hd Festival.
