Artist and filmmaker Valentina Alvarado Matos proposes a shared listening and viewing workshop in collaboration with electronic producer Dania.
When we generate images, do we take sound into account? Can listening to a sound make us think of a certain image? Audio extends and compresses the time length of a sequence.
This workshop proposes a reflection on texture, matter and form from the perspective of sound and image, in order to construct ideas and experiments that are centred on audiovisual perception. An exercise in “sound & vision” in which to listen, watch and experiment with different sound and filmic devices that invite us to think about the relationship between image and sound within the environment of formal experimentation and performance.
The two-day workshop comprises a theoretical part and another more active part, which includes tests and exercises designed to dynamise every aspect of the audiovisual relationship.
Participants are encouraged to bring music that they have produced or simply like to use as a background for visuals.
Delivered by: Valentina Alvarado Matos in collaboration with Dania.
Valentina Alvarado Matos is a Venezuelan-born artist based in Barcelona. Her practice encapsulates film, paper and ceramics. Alvarado regards images and their materiality from a perspective that revolves around identity in the diaspora, in landscape and in gesture. Her work has been exhibited at the Anthology Film Archives, the Museum of the Moving Image and the Microscope Gallery (New York), the Los Angeles Filmforum, Fabra i Coats, Santa Mònica, Xcèntric, the Loop Festival (Barcelona), the Viennale (Austria), the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Oberhausen, the Festival Punto de Vista, SFCinemateque (San Francisco), Matadero Madrid, and Conde Duque (Madrid), among other venues. Her films are part of the Light Cone distribution company’s catalogue. She is currently artist-in-residence at Hangar (Barcelona).
Born in Baghdad, Dania is a music producer who works as a doctor in Australia for six months of the year, spending the other six months in Barcelona. Her career is divided between cultures and continents, based on a heterodox creative vision that is directly linked to her patterns of mobility. She is the founder of the experimental electronic label Paralaxe Editions. In 2022, Geographic North released Dania’s solo debut Voz, in which the artist rediscovered her voice as a primary instrument.
