On its twentieth anniversary, La Casa Encendida is celebrating the fact that paper remains the perfect place where art and design join hands to form a global community.
Libros Mutantes continues to be the meeting point for indie publishing projects. More than 100 exhibitors take over the Courtyard and the fourth floor of La Casa Encendida to show their work. In this year’s edition, Torreón Lectures offers visitors an innovative programme of lectures and interactive workshops, while Torreón Club brings music to the fair.
The hours of the Libros Mutantes Fair are on Friday, from 5 to 9 p.m., and on Saturday 29 from 12 to 3 p.m. and from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Sunday, April 30, from 12 to 3 p.m.
On Friday, Dutch designer Ruben Pater, author of the Untold Stories project and the book on the relationship between graphic design and capitalism, CAPS LOCK (Valiz, 2021), gives a lecture and then takes part in an open debate with the audience moderated by freelance researcher Gabriel Calvin. Poetry Slash proposes a poetry recital of computer-generated literary texts. Plus, curator Francesca Gavin and creative director Léonard Vernhet present Epoch, the indie magazine and platform which they have just founded to offer a different and non-linear dialogue with the past. The first day ends with a performance of algorithm-generated music by Aziks Voidz (R.PHLUX.D of LiveCodeMad).
The lecture programme continues on Saturday with architect and thinker Marina Otero, who recently won the Havard University Wheelwright Prize and will talk about physical architectures for data storage in what is supposed to be a cloud but is nothing of the sort. After Otero, we have German designer Daniel Wenzel, an art director at DIA studio in New York, whose field of action is graphic and typography design and who specialises in the use of animation tools and code. The day ends with an unprejudiced and danceable mix of music genres courtesy of Rata.deinternet & Robzzz (playdoo.club).
The furniture for the fair was designed by Matías Rico, winner of our Muebles de Patio contest, and uses elements like barriers, event fencing, traffic cones, boxes and lashing straps. All of these can be hired for short periods of time and will definitely be used again, so the fair not only doesn’t generate any material waste but doesn’t involve the creation of any new elements either, therefore avoiding the additional waste often associated with manufacturing processes.
