Now in its third year, the she makes noise Festival at La Casa Encendida is more committed than ever to shining a spotlight on women in electronic and experimental music, bringing audiences a programme full of dark, powerful, noisy girl power.
While she makes noise has always been an inherently feminist initiative, as its title confirms, we want it to reflect more than passing fads or fashions. The festival is a multidisciplinary event with a line of action that combines politics, entertainment and aesthetics, based on the conviction that the most inclusive and interesting discourses arise at the intersection of different spheres.
The festival keeps growing, and this year we will enjoy six musical performances, a film cycle, a workshop and an audiovisual performance. Plus, we'll collaborate with cyber-feminist hacker Rachael Runner, the first BotArtist to appear on social media, who will offer different opportunities for online interaction via the hashtag #SheMakesNoise.
The live music line-up brings us artists with Latin American and African roots, peripheral and core beats interwoven with the finest electronic music. The idea is to use the avant-garde and contemporary club culture to reinvent the most ancient rhythms and cultures. Dark, industrial and minimal techno music are also represented by two Scandinavian proposals—the kind of noise we love and identify with best.
This year's workshop will be led by Spanish audiovisual artist Raquel Meyers, who works with Arcade technology and will give a performance.
The film cycle includes the Madrid premieres of two feature films and a programme of shorts directed by women that have won awards at the best international festivals. Films from Thailand, Colombia and Brazil introduce us to new latitudes far removed from the Eurocentric perspective, while two US-made works explore diverse realities.
