Latin America stars in Friday night’s She Makes Noise concerts with Uruguay’s Lila Tirando a Violeta and Colombia’s Bitter Babe.
Behind the name Lila Tirando a Violeta (Lilac Turning Violet) is Uruguayan music producer and performer Camila Domínguez Mata, known for experimenting with different styles ranging from vaporwave to Latin club and from hard techno to electropop. This performance is the presentation in Spain of her latest album, released by the British label Hyperdub. Artist FOL has designed a special audiovisual set for the occasion. The night of Latin vibes will be brought to a close by Bitter Babe, a multidisciplinary artist and DJ from Bogotá whose sets feature a combination of dembow, guaracha, reggaeton, Brazilian funk and club music.
Lila Tirando a Violeta
Lila’s music reveals an ability to synthesise and transform an infinite range of influences and experimentation without neglecting her song writing skills and sensibility. In 2020 her album Limerencia, released on the Mexican label NAAFI, was chosen as record of the year on Bandcamp. This was followed in 2022 by Desire Path, also selected as one of the best electronic albums of the year by magazines like Pitchfork and DJ Mag. The New York Times reported: “The album features pre-Hispanic flutes and ocarinas alongside electronic experimentation, allowing the artist to forge her own dystopia, a universe where the past meets the present”.
Lila collaborates with some of the most established names in electronic production, such as Loraine James and Nicola Cruz, as well as doing mixes for FACT, NTS and KEXP and live sets for the Mutek and Unsound festivals.
She is also one half of the pop music duo A.M.I.G.A., which combines an interest in pop culture and the performing arts. For the past ten years, Lila has added distinction to her condition as a female artist from Latin America through her work in organising and booking festivals and exhibitions, her research into sound design and her involvement in queer activism, feminism, new technologies and video.
Bitter Babe
The Miami-based Colombian artist, music producer and DJ is part of a new school of electronic music practitioners in the US who have shaken up the scene from coast to coast: people like INVT, Coffintext and fellow artist Nick León, with whom Bitter Babe has co-produced two EPs.
She has participated on New York label Air Texture’s eighth compilation, curated by Anthony Naples and DJ Python. In 2020 she collaborated with Spanish producer Merca Bae on Solsticio. Her solo projects have been released on SVBKVLT, Southeast Asia’s most avant-garde label.
During the first half of 2023 she released an EP with TraTraTrax, a label based in the effervescent city of Medellín and made up by Nyksan, DJ Lomalinda and Verraco. She is co-founder of LATITUDES, a project focused on fostering the growth of the Latin American electronic music community.
In the past year, Bitter Babe has played at international festivals such as Rewire and Dekmantel (both in the Netherlands), Ortigia Sound System in Sicily, Primavera Sound and the Horst Arts & Music Festival 2023 in Brussels.
