You Got to Get In to Get Out

27 Apr 2021

The publication You Got to Get In to Get Out. The sound continuum that never ends is one of the elements that make up the eponymous curatorial research project that takes place at Casa Encendida and is based on techno as a cultural, social, historical and material entity. It is a project that is based on a long-term investigation into techno carried out by curators Sonia Fernández-Pan and Carolina Jiménez for La Casa Encendida.

This book aims to be one possibility, among many, of inscription, meaning, memory and expansion of techno culture. The experience and situated knowledge of its authors, as diverse as it is complementary, produce a story of stories where continuous intertwinings and tactics of resistance give rise to a corporeal dance floor that crosses many borders, including those of the club and night. This publication has been conceived, even from the design, as a reading session in the manner of a mix, in which its texts not only expand a material sound continuum , but they share gestures, echoes and movements of a global culture that has been dancing for several decades.

As Carolina Jiménez says in her opening text: "We wanted the initial approach to include, in addition to a what, a how, a methodology. The intention was that the texts that made up this anthology would reproduce the conditions for the maintenance of techno culture. (…) This book appears as a set of resonant textual islands, a transatlantic archipelago of low-frequency counternarratives, alternately traversed by fragility, forcefulness, enjoyment or rage; furrowed in the detours and openings of their own, where they are harmonized. influences that displace the distinctions between genealogies, temporalities, scenes and the obscene of them. Counternarratives that defy an easy summary and oscillate between one's own life and the analysis of the socioeconomic relations in which they have taken place. Particular and local stories and experiences such as part of more general, (dis)continuous and differentiated processes that contribute to the diaspora. Disparate practices and sensibilities that dialogue with each other and that are nothing more than a small notch in the complex understanding of the relations between race, gender and class in the that surrounds techno, because its rarefaction transcends other cultural, political and social domains, in broader concomitance with other epistemologies and sound practices in general.”

They write and participate in the book in this order: Tony Cokes, Carolina Jiménez, Matthew Collin, Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson, Magui Dávila, DeForrest Brown, Jr., Mateusz Szymanówka, Gavilán Rayna Russom, Sergi Botella, Cio D'Or, Tara Rodgers, Enrique Mena, Miguel Ángel del Ser, Sonia Fernández Pan and Kentaro Terajima.
