The Generaciones competition organised by Fundación Montemadrid celebrates its 25th anniversary with the exhibition 24 Years and 1 Day, a reflection on the evolving interests of artists and institutional critique in Spain during the first quarter of the 21st century.
Through selected works, the show aims to understand these “generations” both as the result of conception or incubation processes—the action and effect of originating works—and in their productive dimension, in terms of gestation, training and belonging to a particular lineage.
The working material for this proposal is composed of more than three hundred works, vestiges of 24 years of competitions, made by artists born between 1964 and 1999 and resident in Spain at the time. These works offer us a window on 35 years of Spanish contemporary art heritage, understood as a set of cultural values and assets accumulated by tradition or legacy. At the same time, the works provide a vehicle for reflecting on the symbolic negotiation that underpins our collective construction.
Based on these premises, the proposal stems from an initial review of the works in line with the guiding principles of the prize since its inception: support for emerging art developed in Spain between 2000 and 2024. As an additional criterion, the chosen works were all made by practising artists, ensuring a transversal and representative selection in terms of gender and generation.
