Girlhood, by Céline Sciamma. France, 2014. 113 min.
Marieme views life as a sequence of prohibitions. She feels oppressed by her family, her school and the implacable law of the neighbourhood youth. But her life changes when she meets a group of free-spirited girls. To be accepted as one of the group, she alters her name, starts dressing differently and drops out of school. Under her new identity as Vic, she embraces the street code, a mixture of violence, friendship and freedom.
Céline Sciamma grew up in the Paris suburbs. After obtaining a degree in French literature, she started taking screenwriting courses at the film school La Fémis. She made her debut with Water Lilies, which competed at Cannes and numerous other festivals. In 2019, her film Portrait of a Lady on Fire won the award for Best Screenplay at Cannes, and in 2021 Petite Maman, her latest feature-length film to date, captivated audiences in Berlin and San Sebastián.
