Mousie and Sad Girl, best friends since childhood, live in LA’s Echo Park, a poor Latino neighbourhood. When Sad Girl gets pregnant by Mousie’s boyfriend, a drug dealer called Ernesto, the two become sworn enemies.
Allison Anders is an independent film director based in Los Angeles. Her work is primarily defined by the representation of women and their extraordinary resilience. Gas Food Lodging (1992) earned her a New York Film Critics Circle Award and National Society of Film Critics honours for Best New Director, as well as nominations from the Independent Spirit Awards for Best Screenplay and Best Director. It was also nominated for the Golden Bear at the 42nd Berlin International Film Festival. Mi vida loca (My Crazy Life) premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1993, in 1995 she directed “The Missing Ingredient” segment with Madonna in the film Four Rooms, and in 1996 she released Grace of My Heart, a musical drama produced by Martin Scorsese. In 1999 she started directing television shows, including several episodes in the second and third seasons of Sex and the City. In recent years retrospectives of her work have been held in Thessaloniki (Greece) and Sheffield (United Kingdom), and at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic.
