Neighbouring Sounds, by Kleber Mendoça Filho. Brazil, 2012. 131 min.
Life in a residential neighbourhood of modern-day Recife, Brazil, takes an unexpected turn after the arrival of an independent private security firm. The presence of the guards brings a certain sense of security to the community governed by fear, but considerable anxiety as well. Meanwhile, Bia, married and the mother of two children, has to find a way to deal with her neighbour’s dog, which barks and howls at all hours. An insight into contemporary Brazil and a reflection on history, violence and noise.
Born in Recife, Brazil, Kleber Mendonça Filho became a cinema programmer and critic while making short films. Neighbouring Sounds, his first feature-length film, received its world premiere at International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2012 and was Brazil’s submission for the Academy Awards. The New York Times named it one of the top ten films of the year. His second feature film, Aquarius, starring Sonia Braga, competed at the 69th Cannes Film Festival in 2016 and was subsequently nominated for the César Award and the Independent Spirit Award. In 2019, Bacurau, co-directed with Juliano Dornelles, competed at Cannes and won the Jury Prize. Kleber also programmes film cycles for the Instituto Moreira Salles in Río de Janeiro and São Paulo, and he is the artistic director of Janela Internacional de Cinema do Recife.
